A Family Trip Near Bogotá Where Kids Can Be Kids
In the city a kid lives between walls, screens and "don't touch that." Here they can run, get muddy, chase butterflies and actually wear themselves out. That's why so many families come on weekends: it isn't an amusement park, it's something better, space.
El Nido Andino is a family coffee farm a couple of hours from Bogotá, in the mountains of La Mesa. We run it as a family, so we know what a parent needs: somewhere for the kids to burn energy, and a chance to sit down for a while.
Coming for the day: the day pass
If you only have a day, the day pass is the plan. You arrive in the morning and have the pool, the jacuzzi, the green areas and the trails. There's a kids' rate, lower than the adult one, and a snack included. The grown-ups in the pool, the little ones running around, and if you want lunch there's a restaurant on the farm.
Staying over: a bed or a tent
Staying the night turns it into an adventure. The rooms are the comfortable option. Camping is the one kids don't forget: sleeping in a tent (included, with a lantern, sleeping bag and mat), bathrooms and hot showers nearby, and the same pool the next day. For many kids it's their first night camping, and they talk about it for weeks.
What to do with them
You don't need an agenda. The farm itself is the plan: chickens and ducks to visit, fruit trees and natural springs to discover, trails to walk and lots of open space. They can watch how coffee is picked (kids love hunting for the red beans on the plant), get up early to watch birds with binoculars, or stay in the pool until they're wrinkly.
Two things to come prepared for
This is a real farm, not a water park with a lifeguard on every corner, so the youngest ones need an eye on them at the pool. And the hike to the Salto de las Monjas (a nearby waterfall) is lovely, but it's about forty minutes on foot each way: better for kids who already walk well than for babies. Beyond that, it's one of the easiest plans to do with kids you'll find near Bogotá.
How to get here
We're at Campo Santo-La Esperanza, La Mesa, a couple of hours from Bogotá, and there's parking at the farm. Tell us how many of you are coming and the kids' ages, and we'll help put the plan together. A real person answers.
