What to give someone who has everything: a day at a coffee farm near Bogotá
Everyone has someone like this on the list: the mother who says "don't get me anything," the partner who already has the watch and the headphones, the friend who is leaving the country and can't carry one more thing. For those people the best gift doesn't fit in a box. It's a day (or a night) away from Bogotá, with a pool, fresh coffee and nothing on the agenda.
El Nido Andino is a family coffee farm in the mountains of La Mesa, a couple of hours from Bogotá. Two suites, four camping spots, a pool and a coffee field. And since recently you can give it as a gift card: you set the amount and the person receiving it decides when to come and what to spend it on. It works just as well for Christmas, a birthday, Mother's Day or a thank-you that never found its shape.
Why an experience beats an object
An object is appreciated the day it's opened and then settles into a corner of the house. An experience is appreciated three times: when it's received, while the date gets closer, and that Sunday when the person is in the pool with a coffee in hand thinking about who gave it to them. It also takes up no space, which in a Bogotá apartment is no small thing.
There's a practical advantage too: you don't have to guess the size, the colour or whether they already have one. The person receiving the card picks the plan. Some like the idea of a night in the suite with the hot tub, others the day pass with the kids, others sleeping in a tent without having to carry gear. You give the time; they decide what it looks like.
Three ways to give it
The card is worth its amount and can be used on anything at the farm. But when you're choosing, it helps to have a picture in mind, so these are the three we're asked for most. The reference amounts for each are on the gift cards page.
A day pass for two. A full day at the farm, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.: pool, hot tub, trails, a snack and, if they want, the walk through the coffee fields to see how coffee goes from the plant to the cup. It's the gift for the couple of friends who never leave the city, or for parents who "don't need anything." More on the day pass page.
A night at the farm. One of the two suites, with a balcony facing the mountains, a big tub and breakfast included. On waking, mist rolling down the coffee field. It's the classic for anniversaries, round-number birthdays and "thank you for this year." If the person is more tent than suite, the same card works for camping, which includes the tent, sleeping bag and mat.
An open amount. When you don't know whether they'll come alone, as a couple or with the kids, you set whatever amount you like and they build the plan: a stay, a day pass, camping, the coffee tour, a cupping, the restaurant or coffee from the shop to take home. It's the option for a team gift or for siblings chipping in together.
How it works, in four steps
- You message us on WhatsApp with the amount you want to give, the recipient's name, who it's from and the message you'd like to include.
- We send you the payment link. It takes cards, Nequi, PSE, Bre-B and Botón Bancolombia. You can also pay by bank transfer.
- You receive the card as a PDF with the name, your message, the value, the code and a QR that opens our WhatsApp chat. Print it or forward it as is.
- When they want to come, the recipient messages us with the code, picks the date and the plan, and we apply it to the booking.
The honest part
We'd rather you know this before buying than on the day of the visit:
- The card is used in a single visit. If the plan they choose costs less than the card, they top it up that same day with the coffee tour, a cupping, something from the restaurant or coffee to take home. If it costs more, they pay the difference. We don't hold balances for later.
- It's valid for one year from purchase, with the date printed on the card itself. Once expired it can't be reactivated or refunded.
- The card doesn't hold a date. Availability is confirmed when it's redeemed, and weekends and long weekends fill up: the day pass is capped at 15 people a day and there are only two suites. If the gift is for a specific date, it's worth writing early.
- It's a PDF, not a physical card. If you want to hand it over in person, print it at home.
Who it suits
- Parents, who have spent years saying they don't need anything and do need a Sunday without cooking.
- A partner, when the anniversary or birthday lands on a date when you can't organise a long trip.
- The friend who is leaving Bogotá and wants one last escape before going (or the one coming back to visit who wants to see mountains).
- A work team, as an end-of-year gift that doesn't end up in the pantry.
